With countless diets, programs and products promising to help you shed pounds, it should be easy. But as any dieter knows, it's hard to lose weight. It's even harder keeping it off. Most of us are familiar with the term “Eat Healthy” but few of us are actually sure what it means. The term has so many definitions that it can be very difficult to know exactly when you are eating and what you had. Just to make it simpler, healthy eating involves consuming a diet that combines a balance of all the nutrients that your body needs to function properly.
Staying fit by having a healthy diet involves:
- Eat a variety of foods
- Eat a high-fiber diet ( choose more grains, fruits and vegetables, instead of protein, fats and sugar)
- Maintain a low-fat, low cholesterol diet ( eat no more than 30% of calories from fat, including only 10% from saturated fat)
- Use moderate amounts of salts and sodium and choose sugar substitutes
- Limit alcoholic intake
Having healthy eating habits helps in combating various diseases related to heart, osteoporosis, diabetes and some forms of cancers. Begin with a healthy eating plan. Healthy eating means eating more grains, fruits, and vegetables, and less meat, sweets, and fats.
Having a healthy eating diet plan provides the body with all the essential nutrients to function. Normally a body needs around 40 different nutrients to function properly. All these nutrients are classified under the following groups:
Water : Is the most essential nutrient the body needs. Our body is around forty to sixty percent of water, which helps our cell to provide energy while removing waste products from the body.
Carbohydrates: Usually referred to as sugars or starches. Carbohydrates are converted into sugars by the body to give energy for the various functions.
Protein: Protein helps to build and repair muscles and tissues throughout your body. It is also a major factor when it comes to regulating hormones and producing red blood cells.
Fats: The body needs some fat to process vitamins and minerals and to insulate its inner systems. Fat is also used by the body to provide energy to the body during exercise.
Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins are needed in small amounts to help the body with chemical reactions within its cells and are organic. Minerals are put into different structures within the body to create enzymes, hormones, skeletal bones, skeletal tissues, teeth and fluids.
Healthy eating does not mean that you have to cut out all of your favorite foods. Instead, it just means incorporating more of your favorite nutritious foods, while limiting some of those less nutritious foods which can do more harm than good.
Often the first step to a good diet lies in changing food and eating behavior:
- Don't skip meals
- Eat a series of small meals throughout the day and avoid a big meal late in the evening
- Eat and chew slowly
- Use a smaller-sized plate to achieve a "full plate"

- Try to full yourself with water and salads prior to meals so that your intake is limited.
