The ever increasing obesity rates around the world are responsible for the deaths of about 9000 people every year. Apart from this most of the people are experiencing health problems like arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, cancer, high cholesterol and many other complicated diseases. The main reason behind these entire health problems is obesity. After studying the obesity rates for about 25 years it has been estimated that the number of obese people has almost tripled. And it is also estimated that about 40% of the population will become the victims of obesity within next five years.

One of the main reasons for the sudden increase in the obesity rate is the fast food. The busy schedules leave no time for us to prepare a proper meal. It is much handy to get food from a fast food center or any other eatery. It saves time and the costs involved are also less. These fast foods taste good and make you feel like eating more. Mainly children get addicted to such foods. People don’t mind filling their stomach’s with this junk as it saves time. Today’s generation almost survives on burgers and French fries completely. Fresh foods like vegetables and fruits are forgotten long back. Perhaps, children after few generations will not believe that vegetables and fruits are meant to be eaten. This would be the case if the era of the fast foods is not stopped.

In what way does fast food risks the increase in the obesity rate?

Fast foods are more famous among the youngsters and children who are from the families with good economic value. These kids are not spared from spending on the unhealthy fast foods. Even the adults don’t mind having their grub at the famous fast food centers like Mc. Donald’s. All of them are unaware of the consequences that these fast foods can lead them to. Another shocking thing is that, few people though they are aware of the ill effects of these foods are unable to resist them. These fast foods contain Saturated fats, highly refined carbohydrates, sodium and sugars. They also have very high calorific value. And also they are devoid of all the important nutrients that play essential roles in the metabolism of the body. The high levels of carbohydrates increase the sugar level in the blood. This makes the liver produce more insulin. Insulin is known to increase fat deposition in the body. High insulin levels will increase the amounts of fat depositions in the body. This will ultimately lead to obesity.

What should be done to stop people from having these fast foods?

This is a very complicated task as 80% of the people have got used to these fast foods. Mainly the people living in the urban areas are so used to these foods that preventing them from having these foods is almost impossible. Another impossible task is to stop children from having them. These kids have got no maturity and they do not know what is good and what is bad for them. And the advertisements of these fast foods had hypnotized these urban living children long back. Still if awareness is spread about the ill effects of this food, people may stop relying on them. Most of the people have already started realizing this after the sudden increase in their weights. But very few are striving towards killing obesity by maintaining a healthy life style. The following steps may help in stopping people from having these fast foods.

Awareness must be created among the people about the ill effects of these foods by promoting programs through several modes of communication like TV, radio, internet etc.

Permissions for the openings of these unhealthy fast food centers must be banned by the government to suppress the obesity rate to some extent.

And the most important thing is to ban all the advertisements related to these fast foods. These are the main culprits for attracting the children towards the fast foods.

Creating awareness among the people about the healthy foods like vegetables and fruits is equally important. People should be taught about the right kinds of the foods that should be preferred to remain healthy.
