Obesity Facts

Obesity means extra fat in the body. People are said to be obese when they have more than the required amounts of fat in the body. It is one of the most prevailing epidemics in the world. Few of the facts related to obesity are mentioned below.

  • A recent survey has shown that more than 1 billion adults are obese.
  • More than over 9,000 deaths a year are because of obesity.
  • Nearly 20% of children in every nation are obese.
  • Children who are already obese also grow into obese adults.
  • It has been determined that obesity has trebled since the 1980's.

The main causes for obesity are

Overeating and less physical activity are the main culprits. Intake of high calorie foods like burgers, diet cokes, fried foods and no physical activities make the person obese.

People suffer from obesity even because of the hereditary reasons. If any one in your family line is obese then you are also more likely to become obese. Treating such hereditary conditions is very difficult

Obesity may be caused even because of the underlying health problems like hypothyroidism, etc.

Intake of excess carbohydrates also causes obesity. Excess carbohydrates trigger excess insulin production in the body. This will lead to the fat deposition in the body.

People who eat large single meals are more likely to become obese than their counterparts who eat less but frequent meals.

Slower metabolic rate also causes obesity. Because most of the food that we have consumed will not be broken down because of the less metabolic activity and as a result all of it gets converted into fat.

Apart from these, certain medications like antidepressants (medications used in treating depression), anti-convulsants (medications used in controlling seizures such as carbamazepine and valproate), diabetes medications (medications used in lowering blood sugar such as insulin, sulfonylureas and thiazolidinediones), certain hormones such as oral contraceptives and most corticosteroids such as Prednisone cause obesity.

People who are physical disabled and who cannot perform physical activities at a higher rate also become obese.

Obesity will lead to several health problems in the future. Such health problems include the following

Pickwickian syndrome: This syndrome is caused because of obesity. People with this syndrome have red face, under ventilation, and drowsiness.

Osteoarthritis: People who are obese strain their joints and bones of the knees, hips, and the lower back because of the over weight. This will lead to the degeneration of these parts in the latter stages.

Cancer- Fat cells produce several hormones and chemical messengers. These hormones and chemical messengers when present in lesser quantities are not harmful. But incase of obese people the amount of the production of these hormones and chemical messengers is very high and is considered to trigger the growth of the tumors in the body. The uncontrollable growth of these tumors in the body is known as cancer. Obesity may result in a wide variety of cancers like colon, uterus, colon, kidney, esophagus, pancreas and gallbladder cancers.

Heart attack- Obese people tend to strain their heart as it has to pump with greater force to reach the cells of the entire body. Thus they are more vulnerable to heart attacks.

High blood pressure (hypertension) - People who are overweight have high blood pressure. And studies have shown that obese women are more vulnerable than men. This is because of the same reason mentioned in the above point.

Type II (adult-onset diabetes) – People who have insulin resistance in their bodies also suffer from type II diabetes. And one of the reasons for its causal is obesity Insulin Resistance- Our body needs insulin to maintain the blood glucose levels in the body. But studies have proven that fat cells resist insulin leading to a condition called as insulin resistance.

Sleep apnea- It is caused because of the blockage of air pathway because of the extra fat present on the tongue and the neck.

  • Gout and gouty arthritis
  • Gallstones
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular accident or CVA)
  • High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
  • A person’s life span decreases by 9 years if he is obese.

The above are some of the facts related to obesity.
