Obesity is one common epidemic that is spreading at a greater rate through out the world. The condition when the body has extra fat than required is termed as obesity. Studies have shown that 2 out of 3 people are obese. The prime reason for obesity is the irregular life style. So it is utmost important to have relevant information on obesity. It is necessary to create awareness in the people about the problems that obesity can cause if not taken care of. Some relevant information on obesity is given below.

Why do people have extra fat in their bodies?

Every one of us needs fat to some extent. We need fat to perform functions like storing energy, heat insulation, shock absorption, and other functions. After consuming the food, most of it is utilized to derive energy and the remaining is stored as fat in the body. But when a person consumes more than the required amounts of food and does not take any pain to shed these calories, a major portion of the food is stored as fat. This fat is termed as extra fat. And this extra fat is medically referred as obesity.

Is over eating only the cause of obesity?

Most of the people are obese because of over eating. But there are also other reasons that cause obesity. They are internal health problems like diabetes, under active thyroid or hypothyroidism, intake of excess carbohydrates, heredity, etc.

What kind of health risks does obesity cause?

Obesity apart from torturing a person mentally also leads to several health problems. Few such problems are mentioned below.

Pickwickian syndrome: This syndrome is mostly seen in obese people. People with this syndrome have red face, underventilation, and drowsiness.

Osteoarthritis: This is a condition in which the bones of the knees, hips, and the lower back get degenerated.

Cancer- Obesity can also cause cancer. Fat cells produce few hormones and chemical messengers that trigger the formation of tumors in the body. These tumors divide uncontrollably and this condition is termed as cancer. Caner can occur in any part of the body like colon, breast, blood, etc.

Heart attack- people who are obese are more vulnerable to heart attacks.

High blood pressure (hypertension) - people who are overweight have high blood pressure. And studies have shown that obese women are more vulnerable than men.

Type II (adult-onset diabetes) - the rate of occurrence of diabetes is directly proportional to the body weight. So there are more chances of becoming diabetic if you are over weight.

Insulin Resistance- Our body needs insulin to maintain the blood glucose levels in the body. But studies have proven that fat cells resist insulin leading to a condition called as insulin resistance.

How can obesity be treated?

Obesity can be treated either with the help of a surgery or by non surgical methods.

Surgical methods like lap band surgery and other surgeries have proved to be very effective in getting rid of obesity. This is a painless surgery that includes usage of a lap band to reduce the size of the upper part of the stomach. This lap band is made up of silicone belt and a port. This band can be adjusted even after the surgery and is also approved by FDA. The silicone belt is placed in the stomach and the port is used to adjust the size of the belt which in turn adjusts the size of the stomach. The sole aim of this surgery is to create a feeling of fullness or satiety in a person which discourages him from eating further.

Non surgical methods include taking weight loss pills, following a perfect diet, exercising, etc. Best way to get rid of the excess fat is to exercise. Few such exercises that help in getting rid of the fat are b risk walking, swimming, aerobic dancing, playing outdoor games, jogging, Bicycling, Racquetball, Rock climbing. All the above are cardiac exercises that can shed the extra fat in no time.
