What is Glucomannan?
Glucomannan is a water soluble polysaccharide that is derived from a plant called Konjac. It is derived from the roots or corm of the Asian plant family called Konjac. It can be also obtained from the woods of the conifers and few dicotyledons. It also exists as the hemi cellulose part of the wood.
Bio-chemically speaking, it is a straight chain polymer with little amounts of branching here and there. The sugars, D-mannose and D-glucose are liked with β-(1→4) linkages in a ratio of 1.6:1. Among all the dietary fibers known till date Glucomannan has found to have the highest molecular weight about 200,000-2,000,000 Daltons and also strongest viscosity. It can absorb water which is about 200 times its weight. It forms a gel with the water.
It has been a tradition among the Asian countries to consume Glucomannan in the form of noodles, tofu and heat stable gelled food products. It is also called as Glucomanna, Konjac, Konjac Fiber, Konjac Glucomanna, Konjac Glucomannan, and Manna.
Glucomannan has a great commercial value as a food additive. It is mostly used as an emulsifier and a thickener. A majority of the products are available as nutritional supplements for constipation, obesity, high cholesterol, acne vulgaris and type II diabetes in the market.
How does Glucomannan help in weight loss?
After we consume food, it is partly broken down into smaller compounds in the mouth and is completely digested in the stomach. This completely digested food is then absorbed into the small intestine. The absorbed material enters into the circulatory system from the small intestine and is then distributed to the other body parts. Whereas the remaining unabsorbed material is excreted out. This is what done by our digestive system that is present in the body.
Glucomannan helps in many ways to lose weight.
After consumption, it goes and binds to the cells in the intestine and prevents further fat and carbohydrate absorption.
Its gelly nature fills the stomach and also slows down the stomach emptying process. As a result, the person will have a feeling of fullness for a longer time and does not consume food for longer periods. This way, one can lose weight very easily.
Several clinical trials have shown positive results and it is estimated that about 1 gram of Glucomannan with 250 ml of water when consumed before meals for about 8 weeks can help in shedding about 2.5 kilograms of weight.
Does Glucomannan have any side effects?
Till date no major side effects have been detected. But, as Glucomannan lowers the absorption capacities of the intestine, the body may become deficient of certain important minerals and vitamins also that are required the body. So, it is advised to take multivitamin supplements also along with Glucomannan. However, when consumed in higher amounts, Glucomannan is found to cause diarrhea, bloating and flatulence. These are not major problems and can be controlled by taking lower quantities of Glucomanna.
